The conflict between residents in suburban London over ‘community blooms’ has ended rather sadly.

A note asking other residents to “Please don’t pick my flowers. Thank you.” sparked a massive debate which resulted in the flowers being dug up and moved elsewhere.

“In an area massively affected by gentrification, it’s sad to see people claiming ownership of even the flowers,” one concerned neighbour replied in their own hand-written note.

“Flowers on the public pavement are owned by all the community, not just the house they happen to fall in front of,” reinforced another.

“Are you serious?” asked another, “This is not about ownership or gentrification, this is about someone trying to make the street a nicer place for everyone by planting flowers and people stealing them and stamping on them.”

“Totally agree. This was done with love and a spirit of community for heaven’s sake!”

Sadly one final post-it silenced everyone.

“Love, you’ve got plenty of spare time on your hands. Why don’t you plant some flowers? ‘Mine’ are going elsewhere,” the original writer said.

The exchange was captured in a viral tweet by Mashable reporter Rachel Thompson‏, which attracted some hilarious responses including one which labelled the dispute ‘the most middle-class argument ever’.

We actually had a discussion on this very topic of picking flowers recently – check out what mums thought HERE.

  • What a massive shame that people have to argue over flowers :(

  • Especially gives joy to gardeners including seniors who tend to these however don’t see their flowers bloom, so might seem silly but I understand.

  • Who picks other people’s flowers?? Really, it’s not okay. If you ask a neighbour or someone if you could pick their flowers and they agree, that’s okay. But otherwise, just don’t. It’s not okay.

  • Nice thought, it’s a shame they cannot respect one another :-(

  • I was under the impression you weren’t allowed to plant any of your own things on nature strips.

  • So very petty. If a lady has gone to the effort of planting flowers in an otherwise void patch of dirt to make things look nicer I can understand her being upset. If everyone picks flowers there won’t be any there to be enjoyed.

  • Amazing that people take so much effort to leave notes and start a war of words. What about the people who transform nature strips for all the neighbourhood to enjoy, this is quite the opposite.

  • Well now the street looks bare – blame yourselves people. The flowers were planted for people to admire, not to be taken.

  • Oh gosh this flower business has really gotten out of control.

  • Major league first world problems. These people all need to get a life

  • Why do people pick flowers? The woman planted them herself and she takes care of them. Just watch them, don’t take them away!

  • I’m guessing she paid for the flowers from her own pocket and didn’t gift them to anyone. I say that counts as them being her property, despite planting them in a bare plot of earth by a pole in the pavement. Even if she wasn’t trying to pretty up the street, that may have been the only plot of earth available to her. Maybe she just wanted to tend some pretty flowers. I know she can get a small pot etc and grow them there but still.

  • Seemed like the only way to stop people picking her flowers, remove them from public access. That’s what I would do, except I wouldn’t have planted them in a public space in the first place. You can’t trust anyone, they all think they can help themselves to your things

  • I really don’t understand why people think its ok because its a public place, they are there for everyone to enjoy not rip off

  • She was trying to make the area look pretty and all people could do was take them away. Who was the one paying for the water to keep them alive and who was the one who spent the money to buy them in the first place. Because of some petty people now the street looks unloved again.
