Melbourne café, Napier Quarter, will be phasing out takeaway coffee completely by December 21.

Speaking with the Sydney Morning Herald, Napier Quarter owner Daniel Lewis said, “We are taking our references from classic European and Lygon street in the 1950s… You can certainly make time to sit down and have a coffee.”

According to Lewis, 25 per cent of Napier Quarter’s profit comes from takeaway coffee.

“I’m trying to get people to savour the experience of having a coffee.”

He is even reducing the price to $3.50 to entice people to make the change. According to Lewis, he’s so far been able to shift their perception.

So forget the keep cup, actually take a moment to sit down and enjoy that coffee.

  • I like their reasons for doing this … but I think there will always be a market for takeaway coffee

  • I like the idea. We are living in a time that we’re often too rushed and everything need to be efficient.
However I still like to get my coffee on the go and would deeply suffer when all cafe’s would do this.

  • I like to go to a cafe and sit and have coffee but also grab a take away coffee too. I like to have choice!

  • Would be nice if we all had that luxury to sit down and enjoy coffee in that way. I do, at times, but also have a need for takeaway coffee.

    • Me too! And I savour and enjoy my coffee regardless of sit down in cafe or on the go! :)

  • Mum of 3 kids under 4. I don’t always have the time to sit down for a coffee. From toilet training to tantrums sometimes i just like a quick walk in order my coffee and leave with my sanity still in tack. No doubt people will just go else where for a coffee

  • I like his way of thinking, but he really shouldn’t try to coerce people. He will lose customers and I think it’s also maybe a ploy to sell more food items.

  • Not everyone has time to sit down for a coffee. They may be sent to get a coffee for the boss or to take to meeting.

  • I would love to have the time to sit down and savor a cup of coffee every time but reality is I don’t aleays have that time! With a nearly 2 year old and a busy schedule, sometimes u need a coffee to go. It’s his choice but he will lose business

  • Oh but sometimes you need a coffee at your work desk

  • I do love the idea behind it, but the amount of times I’ve had 3 sleeping kids in the car and have grabbed a takeaway coffee so I can sit somewhere in my car with a nice view, enjoy my coffee (& the peace!), and let the kids sleep…

  • I love this idea – hate seeing these drive though coffee places cropping up everywhere – do you realise what happens when you drop that hot cup of coffee in your lap – it causes an accident and you get burned. If you can’t stop for a cup of coffee, don’t have one. Coffee is meant to be savoured and it is better to savour it with a friend!
