Hello!

A Queensland mum of two claims she’s been living off a fruit-only diet for almost 30 years.

Anne Osborne is a fruitarian – that means she eats nothing but fruit, a diet she decided to adopt in her 20s and has continued ever since. Initially turning to a vegan lifestyle, Anne says she immediately felt the difference, and after hearing a talk from a fruitarian in the UK she decided to give it a go.

An Average Day

According to nineHONEY Anne’s average day consists of a melon and blueberries for breakfast, bananas as a mid morning snack, two avocados for lunch, the juice of some blood oranges for afternoon tea and finally, three mangoes for dinner.

Given it’s a struggle to get kids to eat fruit in any form, the idea of one person being able to chow down on nearly ten pieces a day is pretty impressive!

You’d think fruit salad would be a staple as a fruitarian, but Anne rarely eats more than one type of fruit at a time. “I think if you add things to it, it takes away. If you’ve got a really good mango, what can top that?” As much as we love mangoes, we’re not sure they entirely replace the occasional piece of cake or cheeky brownie.

Irresponsible Parenting?

Anne has two sons, both brought up as fruitarians, with fruit supplemented by breast milk. She denies that her children were deprived of a healthy diet, but Dr Ric Gordon told nineHONEY that people need to be cautious when cutting out essential food groups.

“You’re lacking some of the major things we need in our diet and those are things like omega 3s, the fatty acids, iron, calcium, vitamin D.”

Now grown up, Anne’s children have opted for a more well rounded diet, despite both remaining vegan.

Cravings?

And what about cravings I hear you ask? Well apparently, Anne has none. “I used to like chocolate a lot, and then I think fruit is very sweet and it’s almost like nature’s candy.”

While we admire Anne’s willpower, we’re not sure we are prepared to give up all the amazing food on offer in favour of a fruit-only lifestyle just yet!

What do you think of Anne’s fruitarian diet? Let us know in the comments.

  • I don’t think I could do this! Eating nothing but fruit would send me insane, especially in the winter when it’s cold, I would just want some hot oats for brekkie or indulge in some hot chips with gravy.

  • To do this she would have to be constantly eating. I wonder how much she really spends on food per week.

  • Wow. That seems crazy to me. I wonder what her vitamin levels are

  • Fruitarians would be defficient in so many mineral and vitamins wouldn’t be a healthy diet sounds like they would be missing out on alot of essential nutrients

  • I personally couldn’t do it. Apart from the naughty food, I’d miss vegetables and meat too much. It seems to work for her but I would think surely they’re missing out on other nutrients, protein, calcium etc???

  • I think she is not getting enough variety in her food. But if she’s happy and healthy then good for her. It’s a personal decision and we don’t have to follow it ourselves.

  • I think you need a variety of foods and a balanced diet full of all sorts of vitamins, minerals and nutrients.

  • She is getting too much sugar.I think balance diet is important.

  • I actually think this wouldn’t be very healthy at all. You need vegies too! You’d be missing out of too many nutrients to just limit yourself on fruit. How can it even be enjoyable.

  • All well and good to be healthy but you can be healthy eating other food groups surly the kids and mum would be lacking or have some underlying health issues

  • She doesn’t look very healthy, her complexion in particular.

  • Wow! Amazing that she can do it. Clearly it works for her. It’s not something I think I could, or would be interested in doing.

  • It’s a fascinating concept but not a lifestyle I could do for myself. I would miss my veggies to much. Does she eat tomato? That’s both a fruit and a vegetable. Hmmmm.

  • It seems like A LOT of natural sugar, I tried a fruit diet when I was younger and I ended up getting sick from it because of how much sugar I had, my body just wasn’t use to it.

  • I admire her, it really is a myth that we cannot live off fruit, but you do need to live somewhere that can provide it fresh, because if it has been stored too long will lose its nutrients. I have heard of this lady before and we cannot be certain that she does not eat veggies or anything else, but I have also read about many other people who live healthy on mainly fruit but do not have it so strict like this lady. I don’t think it is a matter of will power but more of a choice. As for her kids, well they turned out okay so good on her for giving them a healthy start to life. If people did their research they would know how much more nutritious fruit is compared to dead packaged foods, and cancer causing animal products. But I love my veggies and a big salad for lunch every day, I have fruit in the morning though and feels better than having cereals that don’t give you as much energy as fruit. The thing is fruit turns into glucose which our bodies run on, all food turns either to glucose or stored as fat which we do not need much of.
