A Sydney school has dumped iPads and gone back to using old-fashioned textbooks in a bid to improve comprehension and reduce distractions.

Reddam House Private School will phase out iPads and introduce a bring-your-own device policy with a preference for laptops.

Surprisingly, the school says that feedback from students has been that they prefer pages to screens.

The change is despite claims from experts that removing technology from the classroom is not a good idea.

“I think we need to prepare kids for the workforce, which will include tablet devices” says Sunrise Psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg.

“We’ve got to make sure they have the skills to use the devices in the workforce”

Many people argue it is certainly not setting kids up for the way of the future. Some argue as with anything a good balance is the key!

  • They are distracting. A bit of tech is Ok to keep up with the times. And books are great too for providing information.

  • Love this! 100 percent agree! How can you work out a maths equation on the screen? I make my kids have a pad and pen next to them when they have online homework, my older daughter is supposed to be online but still uses textbooks- more expensive but easier to read, flick and digest information. Kids will adjust to technology!!they will learn, as they are learning in school they need a variety of learning materials ????

  • I wish my kids Primary School took this view. They have to have an iPad from grade 4 and I gotta admit, I don’t like it one bit.

  • I think banning iPads is a bit extreme. But I do like more text books. Maybe they could find a happy balance using both

  • Yay! A step in the right direction

  • A combination of both would be a good idea!

  • Oh good! I honk that’s great, I really don’t want my kids going to a school who uses iPads etc. I’m sure in the later years of high school would be the best time to learn how to use them in the workforce!
