This incredible mother-of-three reveals her top tips for a super functional fridge.

If you’ve found more mouldy food in your fridge than you’d like to admit, or you have three half empty jars of mayo because you can never find it when you need it, then this is the article for you. Following the birth of her third child, one Aussie mum realised she needed to reorganise her fridge to make prepping meals easier for the whole family.

Taking Inspiration

The busy mum said she took her inspiration from Hello Fresh! food boxes, a meal prep system where all the ingredients are packaged together ready to go. Using $4 plastic containers from Kmart, she labelled each one with a day of the week, with each box containing all the ingredients needed for that days dinner (minus the meat, pasta, rice and spices). “The meat is frozen and I’ll grab that out each morning. All I have to do is grab a box and dinner is easy to prepare,” she said. The shelves in the fridge are also labelled clearly, and the layout reorganised to make it easy for the kids to access their drink bottles and healthy snacks themselves.

A Genius Idea

After posting her tips on Facebook, the Aussie mum has been flooded with messages from parents worldwide. “WOW. I really needed this. So much inspo, thanks for sharing!” one commenter wrote. “This is awesome,” another wrote. “It can be such a pain rummaging for ingredients and looking up the meal plan with a toddler clinging on!” The mum admitted that it takes about an hour to unpack and organise her shopping, but it means that she and her husband are able to save time during the week and prep meals quickly and easily.

We think that incorporating even some of this super organised mum’s tips would make a huge difference to meal prep during the week. No more last minute trips to the shop for ingredients!

  • I would love to be so organised. but im just not.

  • Wow, that’s pretty impressive. Although it wouldn’t work in our house. What would happen if you wanted something in the spare of the moment. Where would you put leftovers??

  • This would work for us except when it’s 9pm and someone decides that they would like a salad and ham sandwich or it’s Saturday afternoon and the kids decide that it’s a great time to make a cheesecake. This doesn’t look like it would leave much room for spontaneity in the kitchen. But this is awesome if it works for you :)

  • It’s a great idea for some households but wouldn’t work in mine.

  • I always try to use up what’s in the fridge before our next grocery shop. Stops us from wasting food and chucking out something that couldve been eaten.

  • Great idea. It helps other members of the family use all of the items in the fridge. Often the males in my home don’t look below the top shelf to all the goodness below and I end up throwing many things out. Grrr.

  • I do similar. On a Sunday afternoon I chop up everything I need for the next 2-3 days and put them in labelled boxes (LUNCH, MONDAY, TUESDAY etc) and do it again on Wednesday.
But looking to go next level with keeping cheeses together etc.

  • Good on her, well done. I have a small family so the fridge isn’t really overly cluttered for the most part.

  • I hope she realizes that you shouldn’t store eggs on the door. They will spoil faster and take on a ‘fridge’ taste. Eggs should always be stored on a shelf in the fridge and in their original carton. If I tried to do that with my fridge, I would need two fridges to make room for everything. I have a lot more condiments, veg, spreads, eggs etc in my fridge.

  • Wow, looks amazing! I feel like I need a bigger fridge! And some free time to do it!

  • I have never found anything mouldy in my fridge – guess because I always check before I buy new foods, and usually grow so much of my own produce..

  • Some great tips. I like the idea of dividing out the veggies for each days meal. I guess it depends how organized in advance you like to be. I like to choose the meal the night before depending on the needs of the day so would prefer not to divide everything up in advance, but to store the veggies together and pick them out as needed from the veggie compartments/shelves. It’s easier for me to be flexible. Sometimes I’ve also been surprised/disappointed at how long things keep and it’s good to be able to use up an item if it is seems to have got ripe quicker than expected, while things that seem to be lasting can be left for another day.

  • What a great idea sounds very nice to do that if you have a massive fridge mine is not as big as hers

  • I find checking the fridge the day before I grocery shop means nothing moulders – I use up anything that’s been there over a week.

  • This is great, but as organised as I want to be, it never works out, so I rummage, rummage, rummage lol.
