A touching poem from daddy on the day he saved his little girl before losing his own life.

On the 24th of April, 2008, Chevon Parker and her dad, David, were heading to Brisbane on the Cunningham Highway at Karara, near Warwick, in southern Queensland, when his prime mover and refrigerated trailer left the road on a sweeping left-hand bend, hit a culvert and clipped trees.

When David realised he was trapped he told his daughter to “Get out and go. Quick.” – insisting that she hurry up and get out of the wrecked cabin. She was only five years old.

David said his goodbyes to Chevon, before the truck caught fire.

Mum of six, Amanda Parker, has written a beautiful tribute to Chevon from her dad.

As written by Amanda Parker for daughter Chevon.

Is this real or am I only dreaming?

It must be real because I can hear my daughter screaming?
Calm down baby girl and slide to me this way.
I need you to be brave baby.
And do exactly as I say.

I hear your sobbing stop
And you listen to what I say
We’ve had an accident baby girl
But I will make sure you are OK.

Please god I need your help here
A miracle would be good.
Please get my baby out
So she can live the life she should!

I can’t move princess
There’s something heavy on me
It must have fallen down
When we hit that great big tree.

There’s fire all around us
The smoke is very thick
You have to get out now
Before it makes you sick.

I love you princess I said to you
Tell mummy I love her too.
You told me you loved me
Then jumped like I told you to.

Now I’m all alone in here
And there’s fire all around
I am not scared though
Now I know your safe and sound.

I can see a light
And it’s guiding me to a special place
And from there I can watch you and see your pretty face

I’m sorry I had to leave you
And this happened to us today.
But when you need me
I promise you, I will never be far away

Close your eyes and you will see me
And you will feel my love too.
I’ll always be smiling down on you
From heaven up above.

Love you princess xx
