A Perth mum who gave birth in a coma after contracting flu while pregnant has spoken of how she feels ‘robbed’.
Byford mother Gillian Wright can’t remember her daughter’s birth, because she was in an induced coma at Armadale Hospital.
She hadn’t had the flu vaccine and was in a coma for eight days before finally meeting baby Kayleigh, who was delivered via an emergency C-section and was also born with the flu.
“I felt quite robbed,” Gillian told 7NEWS.
“I felt like I missed out on the first important things, like meeting her, giving birth … it wasn’t nice knowing she was sick and I couldn’t be there for her.”
When Gillian came out of her coma, she thought only 24 hours had passed.
Her baby was in ICU for more than a week, and could only have limited contact with her father, who wasn’t allowed in the operating theatre during the emergency delivery.
“They actually told my husband, I think it was two or three times, to prepare for the worst, because we don’t think she’s going to make it,” Gillian said.
Gillian is now warning others and says she wishes she had a flu shot.
“I don’t think I would have been as sick as I was if I’d had mine done,” she said.
