A baby boy allegedly nearly starved to death after his vegan parents switched to a mashed potato-based formula they found online.

Julia French, 20, and Robert Buskey, 31, of Florida, have been charged with child neglect after investigators found the infant weighed just under 4kg, after being recorded at birth at 3.5kg, according to WFTV news.

Authorities in Florida claim the child was “frighteningly gaunt and thirsty”.

According to the WFTV, an investigator said the baby was clearly malnourished with his ribs visible and sunken eyes — the infant was also so lethargic he had trouble maintaining temperature and sugar due to dehydration and malnourishment.

“At one point, when the child was doing good and healthy and gaining weight, he was on an organic formula and they changed it on their own,” Titusville Police Detective Lauren Watson told WFTV.

He added, “I’ve never seen a child to this level, this close to possible death.”

The baby is now in foster care and has gained nearly 0.22 grams.

  • People like this should be banned from having further children. They have proved that they are emotionally unfit and lack the intelligence to raise children in an acceptable manner.

  • That is so sad and such bad parenting.

  • How horrific, as if they couldn’t see how the baby was doing.

  • Extraordinary that they could be ths stupid.

  • They could have asked around for vegan breast milk or vegan baby formula or get help. Thats cruel in my own words.

  • So sad. How could they see their baby every day and not notice it’s deterioration? It was physically ill and looked it yet they did nothing

  • This is just terrible. Some people do not deserve children.

  • I have never met a vegan mother who doesn’t breastfeed. People who use donated breastmilk often specify they want milk from a donor who is Vegan. There are many options available.

  • why do things like this keep happening? so sad and unavoidable.

  • How sad. All infant mammals, by definition, need their mother’s milk (or a suitable approximation). There are no vegan infant mammals.

  • What is disgusting is the people posting the formula online, not just the fault of the parents who were swayed to believe in it. Really sad that they took the child away, it would be better to educate them and guide them. More sad mum should have breastfed and could of stayed vegan, the vegan issue is not at fault here.

  • This is horrific and disgusting and uncaring and unwarranted and so many other things. Neglect. Lack of Care. Lack of Love. Uneducated. Too many words and thoughts to mention.

  • absolutely disgusting people! They would’ve seen this was harming their child but they stuck to stubborn stupidity instead of changing!

  • This is just awful! Sometimes parents forcing their children to eat and stick to their own diets is terrible, let them make their own choices when they are old enough to do so.

    • It is not about choice of diet it is the false information that they received from an online post. If you make a choice to eat animal products, you feed your baby animals products so why does a vegan always get put down for wanting to have a vegan baby. They were just misinformed parents and sadly did not choose to breast feed instead.

  • This is so sad, but I am glad the baby is ok. The parents need to be punished as that poor baby would have gone through hell because of their stupidity

    • The person posting the formula online should be punished for posting false information.
