Sydney’s newest zoo is on the hunt for more than 150 staff ahead of its opening later this year.

Sydney Zoo hosted its first jobs fair on Tuesday, March 12, in Rooty Hill, with job seekers learning all about future opportunities at the first zoo to be built in Sydney in more than 100 years, shares news.com.au.

Roles available include full-time senior keeper and general keeper roles across Australiana, reptiles, elephants and ungulates, aquatics, primates and carnivores.

The zoo is set to open at Bungarribee Super Park in late 2019 and has upwards of 150 positions available in the areas of life sciences, zoology, hospitality, maintenance, retail and administration.

It’s not too late!

A second jobs fair is scheduled for late April, with further casual and full-time hospitality roles expected to open.

Sydney Zoo Managing Director Jake Burgess said the zoo was committed to creating hundreds of jobs for Western Sydney residents.

Mr Burgess said the zoo had a target of 10 per cent indigenous employees and would partner with not-for-profit organisation Muru Muttigar in its recruitment.

“Sydney Zoo is proud of the projected growth we will offer the Western Sydney economy. We anticipate these roles to be filled by a mix of local and greater Sydney talent,” Mr Burgess said.

It is anticipated that Sydney Zoo will contribute an estimated $45 million to the NSW economy and attract up to one million visitors each year.

It has already created 160 full-time jobs during construction, and is looking to fill a further 150 casual and full-time jobs for operation.
Sydney Zoo will also be offering job training for its employees as it looks to partner with TAFE in development of a range of Cert III and Cert IV qualifications.

  • We have an open range zoo near Murray Bridge in SA. It is mainly for animals of African origin. Some are endangered in Africa because of poaching and slaughtering. Their remains are not even used for food. You travel around in the zoo in their buses. Security is extremely tight. Gates are closed electronically before others are opened into the next section. Some animals will come up fairly close to the buses, some just ignore them and others move away. Staff on the bus give a commentary. It is next to a large acreage of native scrub land and they have no intentions of ever clearing it. They have volunteers who grow and donate parts of some plants to feed the animals. The monkeys go in large enclosed shelters at night to protect them from predators. I’m not sure what attacks the monkeys but there is huge problems with foxes, eagles and crows in that region. (crows pick out the eyes of sheep). There is also a cafe there. (Food is reasonably priced) and a souviner area.

  • Isn’t is crazy how we clear fell native bush land killing off Australian wildlife at a rate never seen before, and yet we build another zoo to cage animals so people can gawk at them, how sad and disconnected we have become to our own unique wildlife. savethekoalas.org.au
