A Tasmanian woman has issued a warning to parents to be aware of this danger lurking within Kmart candy canes.

Taking to Facebook to share her concerns Amber wrote:

WARNING!
“Today I brought a packet of 100 mini candy canes for $5.00 at Kmart Newtown (Tasmania) and have just opened the first one and this is what was inside of it. (the image attached showed a piece of wire running through the middle of the candy cane)

“I am unsure of what it is but it looks and feels to me like fishing line. So please be careful as I know that a lot of children eat these and wouldn’t know any different.”

Mouths of Mums contacted Amber and she informed us that two days later she is still waiting for someone from Kmart to contact her.

“I have been told that a Kmart official will be in contact with me, but still nothing which is sad, you would think that something like this would be very important to them!”

Amber added, “Please share where ever you feel the need to as I feel it needs to be seen all over Australia!

“It’s a cruel act ( if it was purposely done ) but by the looks of the way it is in there I’m sad to say it would have more likely been on purpose. I’m very glad that I was the one to open it rather than a small child who wouldn’t probably know any different.”

Amber’s post on Facebook has been shared over 3400 times.

  • Wow….I used to buy candy canes to decorate the tree with but stopped a few years back.

  • Would have thought K-mart would have been in touch very quickly following the strawberry needle episode.

  • I’d like to know if it was in just one of them or all of them? One is bad enough, but if it’s in all of them, they need to be removed from the shelves asap! I hope that by now, Kmart has responded and done something about this…

  • Oh my goodness!! That’s awful! Can you imagine what would happen if a small child had this!

  • Ooh, I can’t believe she hasn’t heard back from KMart. Not good enough.

  • Hopefully it was an honest accident and not done on purpose. Come on Kmart and follow up on consumer complaints.

  • Definitely a worry- they need to have stricter checks on these things.

  • Oh goodness, that is very worrying, thanks for the update.

  • Sadly Kmart aren’t great with stuff like this and it takes quite a few people to kick up a fuss before they take it seriously. This is one of the reasons why I shop there less now, unfortunately you most often get what you pay for.

  • Another case of people endangering our foods?

  • Whilst the placement or accidental arrival of things in food should not happen it has been happening for years. I have personally found many things in products and barely got a comment. The worst was a needle like the type screwed on to insulin needles found in a sealed can of mushrooms. Of course I was angry but Woolworths had the same response. Here is a fifty dollars voucher and we will get back to you. They did pay for medical testing for my partner who got it in his mouth and pricked his cheek but only after I kept sending the bill for pathology to them. There was nothing on it fortunately but what if there was. I thought the company supplying the product should have at least apologised but nothing. We will always find foreign objects in food products. We here about it more today because of social media. In the end it is up to us to be vigilent with what we are about to consume.
