Hello!

We all know about the pain of stepping on a rogue LEGO block, but you’re liable to break something if you happen to slip on one of your child’s toy cars.

I know I’ve done it! And my ankle will never be the same.

So I will be forever grateful to this clever mum who came up with a genius idea for storing Hot Wheels and its copycat cars.

On most days, my car-obsessed son scatters his mini-wheels all over the house. So this hack gets the cars off the floor and reduces the mess.

Kerry Whelpdale, mum of two boys, fixed two magnetic strips to the wall and then used these to stick her son’s toy car collection to the strips. Instant decluttering.

Ms Whelpdale, who is married to soccer player Chris Whelpdale, posted a tutorial on her YouTube channel, explaining: “My little boy Jamie is obsessed with cars so as you can imagine (there are lots) hanging around the house.

“So I decided to make a car yard type thing with magnets so he can stick them up on the wall.”

Cheap Solution

This is also a great budget-friendly hack as the magnetic strips only cost $11. And we think it’s actually a cool piece of interactive art.

Kerry used magnetic strips with a sticky back to easily attach these to the wall. She then snipped off small squares of the magnetic strips and attached them to the underside of the toy cars.

Kerry added: “He can see them really easily and he can pick them up and put them back on. You can’t really go wrong.”

And the very best outcome of this is that her son “loves tidying his cars away himself”.

Did we see this mum is a genius!

  • Brilliant…..dont think I would want it on the wall but this could easily be done on the inside of a cupboard door.

  • Great idea!! :)

  • Great idea – we have a different storage solution, we bought a really cute truck wooden hanger with slots in it for the cars to go in and then we hang that on the wall. Functional and a feature :)

  • I love this idea, but I know the kids wont have the patience for sticking them on once the novelty wears off, and for me it is way quicker to scoop them all up with a clean dustpan, and drop them all in their current box, rather than stick ‘em back on the magnetic strip one by one.

  • Actually, I don’t really like it. I would totally bump into it or my kids would just NEVER put them back on the magnetic strip. I would much rather be throwing them into a box then lining them up on the wall.

    • Agreed. I think it’s cute for a few special ones to keep on display, but for a big bunch of them it would be a bit too fiddly

  • Too clever !!!! I’m going to pass this on to a mum I know who really needs this :)

  • A really brilliant idea. Wish it was around when my kids were small. So many are buried outside in the dirt tracks he made – if this was in our house, he would have remembered to go and get them and bring them in, I am sure. Thanks for the post.

  • Good idea but it wouldn’t go with my decor so I just couldn’t bring myself to doing it

  • Looks really cool but my only though is I have too many to do that! For now they are all over the house, i better get organised and out them back in there tub.

  • This is such a clever and impressive idea. We always just used a tub with a lid on it to put them in.
