Travelling with babies is hard work, but these baby travel accessories can make the experience a little easier.

Whilst different cultures and a change of scenery can ignite your kid’s curiosity and become an invaluable classroom, family travel is hectic. And little ones require a lot of gear.

To lighten your load, it’s important to source accessories designed for travel; baby gear that’s useful, portable and lightweight.  Sure, you want to bring the essentials; but packing too much stuff only becomes restrictive and stressful. Affordability is also key. You don’t want to spend a ton of money on baby accessories that aren’t often used.

After you choose a destination your kids will engage with, pre-pack and prepare early for a smooth landing.

Here’s how to make your getaway easier with the smart travel accessories for babies.

1. Hands-Free Baby Carrier

Wearing your baby can be much easier for many parents.

You can move around easily or navigate stairs and keep them secure in tight spaces like planes. Plus, your baby prefers to be close to you. Baby carriers will keep your hands free, take up little space and are cost-effective to buy.

Look for one that distributes weight evenly across your shoulders and hips for better back support. Some also come with a travel pouch for extra convenience.

2. Almost Weightless Travel Stroller

If you’re taking a stroller, make sure it’s light enough to meet the airport weight restrictions.

A good travel stroller is one of the best investments you can make if you plan to travel a lot, but it’s also an expense many new parents can do without. Families who travel a lot should find one that’s suitable for older toddlers too.

This travel stroller fits in the overhead cabin luggage and is suitable for babies up to 15kg. Travelling parents would also benefit from the 3Dlite stroller, which is one of the lightest (6kg) options on the market. It can almost flatten to encourage on-the-go naps with a multi-position recline.

3. Buggy Bagrider

Fun and useful travel wheels for the adventurous ones!

Mountain Buggy Bagriders cater for children from 9 months up to 3 years old, combining a carry on suitcase with a travelling seat. It simplifies travel for parents. Use it to replace the need for an airport stroller or maximise carry-on luggage.

Your child is safely strapped into the 5-point harness. However, it can’t be used with newborns as your child must be able to sit upright unaided. Read reviews from parents here.

4. Backpack Diaper Bag

Diaper changing can be a daunting task for travellers.

Backpack diaper bags can keep all the essentials organised and are lightweight enough for travel. To ensure you choose the best option make sure it includes:

  •          Enough storage pockets to hold diapers and bottles
  •          Zipped and easy-to-access compartments
  •          Handles and adjustable straps with shoulder pads
  •          A change mat or has enough room to tuck a small one in
  •          Wipe-clean material for convenience

Pack the bag with travel items such as baby wipes, wet-dry bags, and zip lock bag to help store away mess. These Planet Wise wet diaper bags are small enough and a great alternative for green-conscious parents.

5. Travel-Size White Noise Machine

To block out neighbours, hotel noise or other disturbances, white noise can help give your baby some peace and quiet.

The healing power of sound is effective to aid sleep for babies and children. To use whilst you’re away, choose a travel-size machine with a compact design that can be USB powered. Here are a few top picks to get started.

  • I didn’t have any of these when my kids were babies and I flew a few times when they were small. I had a carry on bag with nappies, more then I expected to need. Wipes and change lotion. Changes of clothes. Drinks and snacks. As they got a little older, I would pack a few things for them to do as well

  • Bear in mind that you will need to take baby out of the carrier once you sit down. Some Mums forget that. You still have to wear a belt on the plane. With a baby they will add extra to the belt that holds your baby secure against you especially when you are taking off and coming in to land. “speaking from experience” I know one Mum who mixed baby formula (it was a special formula too) in advance as she wasn’t used to flying. She knew it was a long flight and she might need extra. Water is heavy and it made her hand luggage a bit overweight. What annoyed her even more that her flight was late and she wouldn’t have been overweight by then, so late that she only had part of a bottle left when they got home. She should have had 2 left.

  • Some great tips in here. Bringing at least three changes of clothes on any international plane trip is also a must for us (learned form experience). You never know when a baby is going to pick up a bug and being sick on themselves…multiple times.

  • We found packing a few small toys to keep baby occupied. Also sachets of milk formula as opposed to the big tin helped (if you’re not breastfeeding that is). For the older kids some colouring books and pens was essential.
