For several months now, viewing BBC children’s programme In the Night Garden has become an evening bedtime ritual. I often let my toddler watch, too.

In recent times, it has become increasingly clear to me that many of life’s personalities can be summed up across seven In the Night Garden character types.

Here we go:

Type 1: Makka PakkaThe ultimate introvert. A likeable loner. Goes about own business and never muddles in other people’s affairs. You could say they live under a rock. May have slightly odd habits, such as a tendency to collect bizarre things. Favourite show is Better Homes & Gardens. As a parent, constantly wipes children’s hands and faces. Should have shares in antibacterial hand gel, with one in handbag, car, and every household room. This type is always the first to go to bed, even if the party’s pumping.

Type 2: Upsy DaisyIn all likelihood, was a dancer in childhood. As an adult, loves to throw out moves at any given opportunity and in inappropriate places, such as shopping centres. Will always sing in the car, and be louder than other passengers. Some Upsy Daisy types are blessed with naturally dark skin, others will fake it until they make it. Great hair and clothes, with a preference for dance-related attire (even if it’s only leggings under skirts). Despite being a bit of a ditz, Upsy Daisy types are the life of the party and always invited to social gatherings. Loves a pash-and-dash, especially with Igglepiggle types (see next).

Type 3: IgglepiggleThe classic hipster: alternate hairstyle and clothing, and owns a boat. Turns up with bells on and is the last to leave a party. Never wants to go to bed, and often stumbles off somewhere random to sleep. Always trying to crack on to Upsy Daisy types, and is usually successful. Feels naked without their security item of some kind – be it the latest phone, a flash car, or brightest blanket.

Type 4: The TombliboosFriends for years, this is a clique you cannot join. It is a harmless trio who have known each other for decades through family life and private school. They never tire of hanging out together, have similar hairstyles and clothes, and love air kisses and hugs. They also require very little action for their pants to come off.

Type 5: The Pontipines / The WottingersHelicopter parents who are unable to partake in any activity not including their multiple children. They are rarely seen beyond the confines of home or the local park, and rigorously adhere to the family routine. Despite the number of kids, Mr and Mrs Pontipine and Mr and Mrs Wottinger somehow manage to keep their respective homes clean and tidy. Their children’s beds are always made.

Type 6: The HaahoosHaahoo types are often acquaintances through mutual friends. Generally on the outskirts of the action, their presence is rarely felt. Facebook friends only.

Type 7: The TittifersThe Tittifer type prefers its own kind, with lots of show and not much go. Will wear the latest designer clothes to be noticed, and loves to talk about ‘me mi me mi me’ in an annoying sing-song voice. Looks down on others from their high-perched pedestal.

So, there you have it. I think I’m onto something. Do you agree? If so, which In the Night Garden type are you?

(Disclaimer: We can’t all be Upsy Daisy, though!)

  • Never heard of them but they look so cute. The little one at the front looks very much like a Teletubbie.

  • I’m probably mostly Makka Pakka, without the antibacterial handwash, but with a little IgglePiggle thrown in. Mind you, if you asked most of my friends, they’d say I’m more like Miss Piggy from the Muppets.
