Hello!

I’m one of those anxious mothers who always imagines the worst-case scenario. Having a newborn is full of reasons to worry. Is that a sniffle? Why is she crying so much? OMG, I better take her straight to the doctor.

Sleep time is particularly difficult. When my daughter was a few days old and we were still in hospital, my husband and I took shifts staying awake through the night just to make sure she was OK. My hubby thought I was crazy but put my overzealous caution down to raging post-natal hormones.

Night Time Is Uptight Time

A few months later, I’ve relaxed into being a mum and realised that I can’t control everything. But I still get uptight when night time comes. While we high-five each other (softly) when baby finally falls asleep, I can’t help feeling anxious that I won’t be around every minute to watch her cute little chest rise and fall (I do have to get some shut-eye eventually).

Peace Of Mind Is Priceless

So for a mum like me (and really any parent), the best item that I could buy is an intelligent baby monitor. I truly believe that you can’t put a price on a parent’s peace of mind and this monitor has allowed me to breathe easier, sleep better and enjoy being a mother so much more.

A Smart Baby Monitor

Baby monitors have come a long way in the last few years and these days, you don’t have to fiddle with pads and wires and other such annoying paraphernalia. After doing some research, there was a clear winner for me. The Owlet Smart Sock baby monitor is technologically advanced and yet so simple to use. It consists of a sock that is easily fitted to bub’s foot. The device then tracks baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels and sends real-time insights to my phone. How clever is that!

The Owlet Smart Sock baby monitor comes with The Owlet base station, which glows a reassuring green to let me know everything is okay.  If heart rate or oxygen levels leave preset zones, the base station will notify me with lights and sounds. There is also communication if the monitor is getting invalid readings or if the sock has fallen off.

Real Time Tracking

For me, the most important feature of the Owlet Smart Sock is that it tracks baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels in real time so I can pretty much check on bub without disturbing her sleep, whenever I like and from anywhere in the house. My hubby can even use the app to check on her remotely while he is at work.

How Well Is She Sleeping?

I also like how the monitor can provide useful trends into baby’s sleep patterns such as totals hours slept, awake times and a breakdown of light versus deep sleep. It’s really interesting to get an overview of how well my baby is sleeping and adapt our routines based on these insights.

The Owlet Smart Sock is super convenient to use (an important factor for mums of newborns when you’ve got so much else to think about). The Smart Sock and Base Station uses Bluetooth technology to connect so you only need WiFi if you would like to use the app to view live readings or view them remotely. The sock is powered by a coin cell rechargeable battery (the size of a watch battery) and lasts for 18 hours. And I love that the sock can easily be hand washed using a mild detergent (just ensure you remove the sock electronics before washing).

The One Product I Can’t Live Without

If you ask me, as a mum of a newborn, what product I couldn’t live without, The Owlet Smart Sock would be my number one pick! This has been an investment into improving my overall happiness in being a mum. It has helped my anxiety, allowed me to sleep without the constant panic and just given me the peace of mind knowing that my daughter is being watched over at the times when I can’t.

  • What a great idea! It is really stressful waking up at night wondering if your newborn is ok. Especially if they are not in the same room as you. I would have loved this when my daughter was a newborn. Such a good help!

  • Anything for peace of mind with a newborn!

  • We absolutely loved our baby monitor and recommended it to anyone who would listen. As our baby slept in the room next to us, we didn’t need it overnight. However, it was most useful during the day.

  • I think these are a wonderful little invention. One less thing for mum and dad to stress about. I wish they were around when I was having babies, I would have bought one for sure

  • Yes! My Owlet was the only thing that allowed my husband and I to get sleep. We’re both overprotective and overly cautious. It was actually because of our Owlet that we found out so quickly that our little boy has pneumonia before it got really bad.

  • If the baby is premature or one of twins the smaller one sometimes has significant medical problems. In particular I know of one family that who had to rush one of the twins to hospital via Ambulance after specialist paramedics how often get there quicker than the standard attended first. As baby he stopped breathing a few times. I know of another case where at about 3 weeks old they discovered their son had developed laboured breathing. The Hospital discovered he had heart defect. It would have been discovered earlier if they had one of these monitors

  • What a brilliant little invention. So little, you hardly know bub is wearing it. I would have purchased one if they had been around when I was having babies, just for the piece of mind
