The disappointed mum says she’s annoyed that her husband invited his parents on their family holiday without consulting her first.

An upset mum has posted on popular parenting forum Mumsnet after her husband invited his parents on their anniversary trip. Doubling as a family holiday with their two children, the mum said she was excited for some quality time with her husband and kids until he made the surprise announcement…

Six Is A Crowd

The mum said she was over the moon when her husband surprised her with the trip but that quickly changed when he announced his parents would be joining them. “Husband told me tonight that he’s booked our dream trip as a surprise to me,” she said. “I was ecstatic! So happy, so excited and so looking forward to it. I could have burst with happiness. He then tells me he’s also invited his parents along with us and they’re booked and staying with us. He booked it with them a few days ago.” We can completely understand this mum’s disappointment – travelling with your husband and kids is one thing, but adding in laws into the mix can be a totally different experience!

Just Needed To Ask

The mum says it’s not that her in laws are coming on the trip, but that she wasn’t asked before the decision was made. She says her husband was less than impressed with her reaction. “He started getting really defensive and talking about how much they do for us and love the kids and they’ll be able to help them whilst we are away,” she said. The situation took a turn for the worst when her husband packed his bags and went to stay with his parents following the argument. “He said I’m selfish, spoilt, ungrateful and a cow. I’m prepared to be told I’ve been terribly unreasonable, but I was just so desperately longing for some time as a family, no phones, no work, no one else – just us. Have I been awful? Should I have just faked a smile and accepted it?”

The lesson to take away? Surprise holidays are always a good idea, so long as it is the destination that is the surprise and not the company!

  • There was no communication regarding her in-laws, this is probably why I would get upset too.

  • He packed his bags and went home to Mummy and Daddy? I would be telling him that he can stay there….dont bother coming back.

BUT….. I REALLY DONT LIKE THE PHOTO THATS POSTED WITH THIS ARTICLE.
There is no excuse for violence and we are working so hard to make change with young boys so we can stop the violence against woman that it is not acceptable for woman to be violent against men either. We cant have it both ways. Its either acceptable or its not.

  • My parents joined us our family on vacation (in a different hotel) and my wife was upset I ok’d it. Why? So everyone else in the world can book that trip but my parents?!? Ridiculous…grow up!

  • I think I’d be annoyed too – communication is key in every aspect of married life

  • Oh my gosh, that would be a nightmare!
I can’t think of anything worse.
It’s their anniversary I don’t know what his parents have to do with anything unless he’s only inviting them to have them babysit the kids!

  • Probably should have asked her first. Maybe in a different hotel or resort would be ok so you can still choose to avoid if you like

  • Oh no, that’s not how a holiday is supposed to be. Husband and wife should discuss everything and make all decisions together. I’d be down right annoyed, just a no no no.

  • No, her reaction wasn’t over the top. It’s clear who the selfish person was. I hope the disappointed mum takes a leaf out of her hubby’s book and surprises him with a similar holiday, inviting family member’s she didn’t discuss with him before hand.

  • No way would I accept that. Going to visit parents-in-law on holiday is one thing, but for a husband to invite his parents on a planned holiday without asking his wife is a no, no.

  • There are surprises and then there are surprises! I don’t think so. No way is that a holiday. She is well within her rights.

  • I’m sorry but I would have told him to have a lovely holiday with his parents. The other alternative would be to tell him her parents should go along as well. Different if they were staying elsewhere but staying with them? Not an anniversary I’d be looking forward to.

  • I would be furious if my hubby did that, I want a holiday AWAY from the family not with them.

  • Ohmygawd what about HIS reaction though!? What a hissy fit! Call me a cow, I’d be sending him to stay with his parents not letting him storm out!

  • Always, always, ALWAYS ask your wife about things like this!

  • No way! How selfish is the husband? It was more about him and not about her. He was just thinking his parents could babysit the kids while he was holidaying.
