Woolworths response after Coles cops criticism over new plastic container promotion.

Coles new promotion has been hit with criticism, with some shoppers complaining just how much you have to spend to receive even the smallest container.

The new promo means shoppers can earn 1 container credit for every $20 they spend in Coles. And with the smallest container requiring 10 credits – that’s a $200 spend. The biggest 1.5l container will cost $360!

They come in five sizes and range from 10 – 18 credits to claim your free container.

600ml – free with 10 credits
1-litre – free with 12 credits
1.2-litre – free with 14 credits
1.4-litre – free with 16 credits
1.5-litre – free with 18 credits ($360!)

Says one critic: ‘It’s a joke. I’m spending $200 for a tiny container that I could get for a couple of bucks in Kmart? No thanks. Saving credits, all that hard work just to get a tiny container just seems like a big headache to me. It’s not like with Stikeez or Little Shop where you get something in your hand that same day.’

Added another: ‘It’s not free … if it was free they would just hand it to you. Nothing is free. You have to spend $200 to get it. What aren’t people getting?’

Woolworths steps up!

Woolworths has answered Coles’ container promotion with a simple markdown of its own.

Marking down their nine-pack of plastic containers to just $5.00 each.

Members of Markdown Addicts Australia say stores are selling out of the plastic containers because customers are taking as many as they can fit in their trolleys.

“On a bargain high right now,” one said. “Scored myself 11 sets of 9 container Sistema packs for………….wait for it……….$5 each that’s a total of 99 containers for $55.”

  • People are so strange about these promo they still just spent $55 on plastic containers without any groceries.

  • How many plastic containers do you need? I prefer glass and wish they were cheaper, they last forever too. So I use a lot of glass storage jars, does the same job. I have way too many but they are hard to find so I keep a lot of spares in case I drop one lol.

  • More plastic though. I’d be more interested if they were glass containers or recycled ones.

  • If you have the points from normal shopping, why not claim a free container or two! I try to shop the specials at both Coles and Woolworths, being they are equally convenient for me to get to. I don’t see a negativite in the container promotion.

  • The Coles one is rubbish because you need to be enrolled into Flybuys.

  • I never buy more than I need when I shop and if I earn a reward it’s for shopping in that store not for how much I’ve spent. Things will never change with stores trying to better each other.

  • People are going mad! Just to be clear… Coles are offering these in good faith. You don’t have to be stupid enough to spend $200 to get a container. If you do your normal shop, you’re rewarded. I can’t believe how people flip this into negativity. And so we go tit-for-tat with Woolworths now offering something with plastic. It’s almost like two kids having to one-up each other all the time. Just go with it, take the fun and reward and purchase, and stop the whingeing. Please.

  • I won’t and wouldn’t change my shopping just to get the Coles promo. But what woolies has done is sell the usual plastic containers at a much reduced price – just part of supermarket games to get people talking about woolies not Coles.
They both do it & play games. At the end of the day it’s about making money for them. For me – I’ll just shop as usual.

  • Who said plastic bags were the problem? Must also say I don’t want 9 containers for whatever price I want one.

  • And the battle of the plastic containers begins lol

  • This promotion not available at my Woolies store. Not that I need any more plastic containers anyway after a lifetime of collecting Tupperware!!

  • I work for Coles.

……even I see how stupid our promotion is. Will not be going out of my way to get a container, that’s for sure.
