The question that used to be so simple has now become more complicated than ever. That question is: “Would you like milk with that?” Simply followed by what used to be a yes or no answer.
Now the question is “Would you like milk with that? We have full cream, skim, raw, lactose free, soy, almond, rice, coconut, oat, cashew, goat, sunflower seed, and camel (yes camel but that’s a whole different story).
So, which are we to choose in this world of many milk/mylk options? (FYI mylk is the word is used to describe non-dairy milk products)

We see it plastered all over our Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook with the hashtags #vegan #healthy #foodie. So, if everyone is doing it, it must be good right? Not always but in this case…yes it is! Let me explain why.
Whether you are vegan, lactose intolerant or just looking for a healthier milk option, almond milk is a great alternative and not to mention DELICIOUS!
If you choose to purchase your Almond Milk from a supermarket, try to opt for unsweetened, as it has no syrups added. When adding almond milk to coffee, if you find it curdles, this is because of the acidic levels of the coffee you are using. I use ground coffee in a plunger then add the almond milk after – works perfectly every time.
Almonds are rich in nutrients such as protein, fibre, Vitamin E, magnesium, selenium, manganese, zinc, potassium, iron, phosphorus, tryptophan and calcium.
Almond milk has no cholesterol and is often recommended to lower blood-sugar levels and to treat constipation.

So, how can you make your own Almond Milk? Easy!
Step 1: Soak one cup of raw almonds in water overnight. Leave extra water to allow for swelling.
Step 2: Remove almonds from water. For a less gritty texture, remove skins. Toast for a richer flavour.
Step 3: Place almonds in a blender with two cups of water. Blend until creamy.
Step 4: You can add flavouring such as cinnamon or honey, and then blend again.
Step 5: Strain mixture through cheesecloth or a fine strainer to separate pulp. Drink. For a creamier version, leave covered in the fridge overnight. It will keep for up to a week.
