When you see the beautiful window treatments in glossy magazines, you realise the impact curtains and blinds have on a room.

But how easy is it to achieve that same chic look if your interior design skills are limited?

Actually, it’s not as hard as we might think to create a beautiful statement with window treatments if we consider the following tips:

Decide on custom-made or ready-made curtains

If you’re handy with a tape measure and a drill and your windows are a standard size, your budget will appreciate the ready-made option.  Spotlight’s ready-made curtains are affordable and available in a fantastic range of styles, fabrics, colours and drops to suit most homes.

Spotlight also have all the accessories needed to complete the job, so if you’re going for the DIY option, you should study Spotlight’s handy home hacks on how to measure our windows, whether to use rods or tracks and how to hang curtains.

But if DIY isn’t your thing, you can use Spotlight’s Made to Measure curtain service.

Using Spotlight’s professional custom-made service means you can pop the kettle on, sit back and watch our home transformed as the newly-hung curtains create that ooh-la-la! look we see in the ritzy-glitzy magazines.

Spend time deciding on design, colour and style

While it’s easy to get caught up in how to achieve a glossy magazine look, we shouldn’t ignore the functional aspects of window treatments. If we want easy access to open windows and airflow, we should consider roller or roman blinds for windows that open vertically. Which direction do our windows face and how much light control is needed? Do we need sheer blinds in living areas to prevent sun damage to floors and furnishings? How much insulation do we need to prevent heat transference through glass? What curtains or blinds will work in the bathroom and kitchen?

To help us answer these important questions Spotlight provide expert tips on which curtains and blinds are best for different rooms.

Once we’ve nailed the practical aspects, we can tackle the fun stuff. Which colours work best? Patterned or plain fabric? Do we want the curtains to blend in or stand out? How will the curtains look from outside the house?

But luckily for us Spotlight have all the answers. To ensure our curtains don’t clash with our interior style, Spotlight have fabulous tips on how to match curtains and blinds to home décor. Well worth a read and much quicker than pursuing a degree in interior design!

So, the best tips for creating window treatments like you see in magazines?

  1. Upskill yourself if you are planning to DIY it.
  2. Choose window treatments which address all your needs including privacy, light and temperature control.
  3. Don’t mix and match patterns – if you have patterned furnishings choose plain curtain fabrics.
  4. Choose either (a) the same colour as your walls (b) neutral colours or (c) contrasting colours to your walls which match a colour in your home furnishings.

Happy decorating!

  • Good curtains are crucial to heating and cooling of house. Especially when you live in a place where winters are -5 and summers get over 40!
These days I prefer roller blockout blinds and combine with sheer blinds. Have privacy of no one seeing it but can see out & lets light in during day. Spotlight are fantastic for their ready made blinds & so easy to install.
